21st September 2017
The hot topic of the day, with postal votes out and everyone being very vocal , is the marriage equality debate.
So with your wedding coming up what feels right to you?
In order for your marriage to be legal here in Australia, your celebrant must say the legally binding words called “The Monitum”. These words establish that marriage, here in Australia, is the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.
But you have choices and you should definitely discuss this with your celebrant.
It’s important to remember the weight that words can carry – while it may feel like supporting marriage equality within your  wedding is a bit of a trend at the moment, the acknowledgement that things aren’t fair or equal but you really want them to be, can be a huge difference maker to one, two or all of the people present.
You can live your life as an advocate for equality while keeping your wedding neutral and that is absolutely fine as well.
It is your day so make sure you discuss what fits with you both as a couple and a family and within your friendship circle.
