Is it nice to turn off your device?

Requests for the unplugged wedding are becoming commonplace now. This is becoming more and more evident at each wedding I do. Couples are now asking me to please ask their guests to refrain from using iphones and Ipads and cameras during the ceremony. I get this. Especially if they have invested in a professional photographer who recently explained to me that he had a gorgeous wide shot all lined up as the bride walked down the aisle to an emotional groom and all the photo showed was every single person holding up a LCD screen!

There is also the whole “being present”, “living in the moment”, which couples explain to me as being really important to them. One bride said that she looked around and was trying to connect to her guests but all she saw were screens held up!

The other request I often have now is to ask everyone to not upload anything to social media until the next day. That is also a combination of enjoying the day and not worrying about being on your phone as well as letting the best images be seen first that the couple have some control over. What do you think?
